The Direct Aid Program (DAP) of the Australian Embassy sponsored the provision of Water and Sanitation Facility for the Livelihood Workshops of Persons with Disability under the office of Ms. Tammie Dawes, Secretary DAP Committee of the Australian Embassy and Ms. Doris Avila DAP Resource Officer. This project which is truly beneficial provides clean water and the much needed sanitation and accessibility for the center’s 350 working force most of whom are persons with disability. The proposal for the construction of a second floor in the metalcraft department was approved during the latter part of 2011 by CBM.  A project that will not only expand the production facility of the metalcraft but  will also respond to disaster preparedness of TWH workers and staff since the second floor will also serve as an evacuation area for persons with disability in case of flooding. This is CBMs second grant following the project they have supported in 2010 “Recovery from Typhoon Ondoy & Disaster Preparedness” which covers: Disaster Preparedness; Procurement of new equipments; Recovery of lost inventory; New roof construction; Roof extension; Overhauling of the Dust Collector and Improvements on Work Safety. The on-going construction project is part of CBM’s emergency response to Disaster Preparedness program and will take place for a period of 90 days. …..A threshold to escape the barriers of PWD

…..A threshold to escape the barriers of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) — this is the expression of Access 2020, Race to Success…

TWH, as the chairman of this year’s project, used the catch of a reality TV and an adventure race to exhibit the facts and the conventional everyday situations, and the camaraderie of team playing.  Access 2020 is a three day racing event to realize mainstreaming of persons with disability. The participating teams were Adidas, Mang Inasal, JCI Manila, Physicians for Peace, Christian Blind Mission (CBM), Eco Savers, and Canon.

Jerry Olmeda, one of the PWD racers in wheelchair and who was a member of the Mang Inasal team who bagged the 1st place in the race openly expressed his comment and gratitude for the event. “Happy! I met lots of friends. Most of the places we’ve been to are not accessible for PWD. But since the group is persevered to win, we did some strategies. I even made one of my team mates, who is blind, to sit on my lap because he is already having difficulty in the race and he gets tired easily. One of the situations that I won’t forget in Access 2020 was when I fell off my wheelchair because it was raining then so I failed to see a hole on the ground that was covered with flood.”

A member of the Eco Savers Team (2nd Place)  and a player of TWH Basketball on Wheels, Marcos Rabasto, was also delighted about the event; “We, PWDs are glad that there is this Access 2020. Because of this, many have become aware of our situation. There are still many places that are not yet suitable for us PWDs; yes, there may be an elevator but it doesn’t function; yes, there may be a ramp but something’s blocking it. There was even a situation once that I needed to get off my wheelchair just so I could use the stairs because there is no elevator.”

Ms. Addah  Arcilla (Visually Impaired), a member of the CBM Team expressed that the whole race was a very good experience; “Access 2020 proved that PWD can compete side by side with non-PWD.  The adventure race itself created a stir to the public because people became curious about it. Our team experience discrimination when we waited for 30 minutes to flag down a jeep  because the drivers were hesitant to allow us to ride because one of my team members is in wheelchair. ”

Also, one of the racers of the JCI Manila Team (5th Place), Suzanne Santos R.N. (non-PWD), was moved by this event; “Despite my being a nurse and considering that I have been with PWDs before, I still need to know more things about them. There are some PWDs who are sensitive in some situations and there are those who are not. There are some who need to be treated carefully because they get easily startled and panicky and there are some who just need to be treated casually.”

As quoted by her team-mate, Mcdel Natividad (PWD in wheelchair), “Just give us an opportunity to prove ourselves and we’ll do our best. We’ll even surpass the capabilities of a non-PWD.”

Aside from PWD accessibility, Access 2020 has other advocacies to help the country and these are to promote the environment, health, tourism, and society.  Since this is an adventure race where PWD and non-PWD are teamed up to travel and achieve tasks, historic and tourist spots in the metropolis are highlighted. Not only that, the camaraderie of teams and the caring of the society that would witness the race will develop.

The government and the NGO sectors are progressively involving themselves to share a significant part of their effort to support this project. Hence, with an increasing number of supporters, Access 2020 shall now pave the way and break all barriers up until the year 2020.

Access 2020 Race to Success 2011  is made possible by the joint efforts and partnerships of government agencies (DSWD, DOTC, DOH, NCDA, MMDA, DENR, DILG, DPWH, NCDA, PIA), non government organizations (Life Haven Inc., Phil. Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine, WOW LEAP, NOVA Foundation, Foundation for These-Abled Persons Inc. Philippine Council of Cheshire Homes for the Disabled, Physicians for Peace, Wheelmobile, ILLC, United Architects of the Philippines, Federation of PWDs Cavite, Association of PWDs, Bacoor, Cavite) and business establishments (ADIDAS, RICOH Phil., CANON, Olympic Village, SM City Fairview, Mang Inasal, SMART, PAGCOR, SM Program on Disability Affairs). Running priest Fr. Robert Reyes, former governor  Grace Padaca, PWD advocate, Architect Jaime Silva and physician Dr. Josephine Bundoc served as consultants.

TWH – Wheel of Volunteers

TWH – Wheels of Volunteers started in 2011 with the objective of establishing local and international volunteer. Long before we opened this program, there have been letters requesting for volunteer services.  We made an assessment on our needs and current resources and enhanced the program to benefit both the organization and the volunteers.  Most of them were walk-in partners,  clients, visitors, schools, and communities.   To mention a few; Latter day Saints, La Consolacion College, Arellano University , San Beda College, Korean International School, and three individuals named Jenie Jugo, Sarah Basuel and Karina dela Cruz and seminarians named Bro. Randy, Bro. Joel, Bro. Irvin and Bro. Robert from Inter-Theological School in New Manila.  A total of 300 plus volunteers have joined our TWH wheel of volunteers.

CASA BAYANIHAN is an academic program of Sta. Clara University in the United States?  Students come to Manila for 4 months with the desire to integrate rigorous academic studies with direct immersion in marginal communities.  The casa experience is an invitation for students not only to develop their ability to think critically and analyze complexly, but also transform their hearts and minds.

The first batch of students were Annie and Diana headed by Ms. Trena Yonkers, Executive Director,  Sta. Clara University in the USA.  The immersion started in August and ended in December 2011. The students have experienced working in the packaging of medicine and had the chance to mingle and work with persons with disability.  Among the workers whom they were immersed on a weekend were; Marcus and Gemma, Bong Cumagon, Marichu, and Helen. They come to TWH every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

THE JEEP PROGRAM  (Junior Engagement) is the praxis component of the course Philosophy of the Human Person at the Ateneo de Manila University.  It aims to enable third year students to engage the world beyond the self.  It provides students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of what it means to be human persons by engaging in the realities of people who experience life on the margins of Philippine society.

The program started six years ago in partnership with the Office of Special Concern and Involvement of the Ateneo de Manila University. They have entered into this partnership on the belief that learning should not be limited in a classroom set up but more so in the actual lives of people living in the different communities. With that school of thought, learning gets more impact on the student’s lives as they go along their education. A total of 100 students were accommodated for work insertion in 2011. This year, eleven students started their work insertion from Mondays to Fridays for four hours. With this, they get the chance to be involved in our various events and activities. Our thanks to OSCI Office!!!

From the Desk of the President

The 39 years of uplifting lives of persons with disability (PWDs) in the Philippines is indeed a milestone for Tahanang Walang Hagdanan (TWH).  What our founder, Sr. Valeriana Baerts, ICM has started with her difficult beginnings has always been anchored to her purpose, her mission to serve PWDs. We toil to continue this commitment to serve, holding on to our faith in GOD and always trusting in His Providence. This commitment to serve is further fortified by mantle of responsibility taken on by the Board and Management as well as the diligence of the workers.

Significant accomplishments in TWH have been marked like the provision of major benefits for the workers, automation of the inventory system, improvement in the livelihood programs particularly the expansion of the workshops, establishment of the admin building and training center for PWDs.

Viable projects continue for resource development and advocacy like the recently concluded Access 2020 Race to Success held last December 3, 2011 timely for the celebration of the International Disability Day. This event clamors for the strong implementation of legislations for PWDs such as the Accessibility Law (BP344), Magna Carta for the Disabled (RA7277), and its Implementing Rules and Regulations (RA9244).

We know that many more meaningful accomplishments are still to be done and we believe that we can all achieve these. As long as we keep our focus on our purpose and mission, we anticipate fruitful years ahead. Happy 39th Anniversary! Maraming Salamat po!
